The European Union is not recognized and not recognized the independence of Abkhazia, but is willing to work with its leadership in order to resolve conflict, said EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby at a meeting with the head of the Georgian Parliament David Bakradze.
In late August 2008 Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia after a night of 8 August 2008 Georgian troops attacked South Ossetia, which, like Abkhazia, since the early 90-ies of the last century, sought to recognize the independence of Georgia, and destroyed part of its capital, Tskhinvali. Russia defending South Ossetia, many of whom have taken Russian citizenship, put troops into the republic, and after five days of fighting replaced the Georgian military from the region. Abkhazia, meanwhile, regained control over the whole territory of the republic, replacing the Georgian troops from the upper Kodori valley.
As reported by the press service of the highest legislative body of Georgia, during the meeting they discussed the Russian-Georgian relations, the internal political situation in Georgia and the situation in the conflict zone in Abkhazia.
